Nominate a Cohabiting Partner

If you have been a contributing member on or after 1st April 2008 you can choose to nominate a cohabiting partner to receive a pension in the event of your death.
To make a nomination, you and your partner must sign a declaration form. However, in order for the nomination to be valid, all of the following conditions must be satisfied by you and your nominated cohabiting partner for a continuous period of at least 2 years on the date you both sign the nomination form:
- both you and your cohabiting partner are, and have been, free to marry each other or enter into a civil partnership with each other, and
- you and your cohabiting partner have been living together as if you were husband and wife, or civil partners, and
- you or your cohabiting partner have not been living with someone else as if you/they were husband and wife, or civil partners, and
- your cohabiting partner is either financially dependent on you or you are financially interdependent on each other.
In the unfortunate event of your death we will have to verify that the conditions for nomination have been satisfied, in the form of a statutory declaration from a solicitor.
If you are married or in a registered civil partnership you do not need to nominate your partner as they are automatically covered for survivor benefits in the event of your death. A nominated cohabiting partner’s pension is based on the member’s pay and membership along with an accrual rate of 1/160ths.
Survivor benefits payable to a registered nominated cohabiting partner are based on membership from 6th April 1988.
Completing a form is important as we cannot pay a pension to a cohabiting partner if we do not have a valid nomination in force.
Nominating a cohabiting partner is separate from any previous nomination you may have made in favour of any lump sum death grant that may become payable in the future.
