Investments

The Pensions Authority collects contributions from employers and scheme members and invests them in order to create a pot of money big enough to pay the pensions of all members of the scheme when they become due. We are one of the biggest pension funds in the UK and consequently have a large and very diverse range of investments.

The way in which we invest derives from a set of investment beliefs which are summarised in this document

We have to produce an Investment Strategy Statement which sets out how much we will invest in each of the different types of asset in our portfolio and the governance processes involved in investment decision making. You can find the current and previous statements at the link on the left hand side of this page.

The Investment Strategy Statement is created within the framework of the Funding Strategy Statement, which is available at the link on the left which creates a link between the actuarial valuation of the Fund’s liabilities and how they will be paid for. Actuarial Valuation Reports are available here

We publish details of the various investments we hold and these are available at the link on the left. In addition our investments in what are called “alternative assets” such as private equity and infrastructure operate on a slightly different basis to traditional stocks and shares and we publish additional details of our commitments to these funds and of our commercial property portfolio which are also available through the links on the left.

Increasingly as a result of the Government’s policy of pooling local government pension scheme investments our investments are managed by the Border to Coast Pensions Partnership which is a company owned by SYPA and 11 other local government pension funds and you can find more details about Border to Coast here

Border to Coast is overseen by a Joint Committee made up of the Chairs of the 12 participating pension funds and you can find information about the Joint Committee and its meetings here

Ensuring that we are a “good owner of good companies” is very important to us and we do this through an approach called responsible investment and you can find out more about this through the link on the left hand side.
